Internet Explorer Browser Settings (Blank Screen)

If you get a BLANK Screen (like the background image below) when you run any of the SOCR applets (www.SOCR.ucla.edu) in IE (or other browsers), you will need to check your privacy settings, to make sure your browser does NOT block the applet from displaying on your screen.

The "insert" image below illustrates some of the settings you may need to set (the first 3 Java check-boxes) to get your browser to display properly SOCR Applets.

RE: SOCR does not run - GRAY screen appears

This was a problem brought up by several users that identifies the protocol to fix your computer to associate/start the Java environment each time a web-applet is selected by the user.

==========================================
Some people had the GRAY-SCREEN problem and
I thought that the issue was lack, or incorrect installation, or the Java environment on your machine. I just double checked and the SOCR resource is up and running properly. I've tested it on Netscape 7+, Mozilla, Safari and EI 6+.

There are two potential problems for seeing a gray screen when clicking on any of the main-page links, which start Java applets.

1. You do not have Java installed on your machine! Have you ever run any Java applications/applets on your computer (or over the web?). If yes, this is not the problem. If not, we'll need to install the free Java
run-time environment from http://java.sun.com.

2. Your web-browser is not linked/instructed to call the Java environment when you click on a web-applet. This is done by browser-preferences --> helper applications --> associate .class and .jar web-applets with the Java virtual machine (a system administrator may be helpful in resolving both of those issues).

None of this is really complicated and you should have Java installed on your machine, in general, not just to run SOCR. But it may take an hour to figure it out. Of course, this setting is done only once. After that every time you encounter a web-applet it will run smoothly.

Can you see some of the SOCR applets which are not signed with secure certificates (e.g., Probability Calculator)?

Please post follow ups if these hints do not solve your problems.

One user reported the following solution to resolve the BLANK screen problem with running SOCR applets on his system:

1) Uninstalled all of my previous Java stuff. On a Windows XP computer, go to START MENU > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Remove everything that mentions "Java".

2) Go to JVM Java download page. In the upper-right hand corner, you should find "Free Download << Get It Now" Click on that.

3) The correct Java stuff should automatically install from there (keep clicking "OK" and follow the on-screen directions.

(4) Now all SOCR applets should work for you.
